The first recorded sandwich was made by the famous 18th-century English nobleman John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Legend has it that he asked for his meat to be served between two slices of bread so that he could continue playing cards without getting his hands greasy. From then on, the dish became known as the "sandwich" in honor of Lord Sandwich.
