Pamela Travers was an Australian-born British writer best known for her "Mary Poppins" series of children's books. She was born in Queensland, Australia in 1899 and moved to England in 1924. Travers published the first "Mary Poppins" book in 1934 and went on to write several more in the series.

Travers was known for being very protective of her character Mary Poppins and had a strained relationship with Walt Disney when he adapted the books into a popular film in 1964. Travers felt that the film took too many liberties with her original stories and was disappointed with some of the changes made.

Travers was also a poet and journalist, and she wrote several other books outside of the "Mary Poppins" series. She passed away in 1996 at the age of 96.

Cultural guide: Pamela Travers' life and work have been the subject of several biographies and documentaries. One notable film about her is "Saving Mr. Banks" (2013), which tells the story of the difficult process of adapting her "Mary Poppins" books into a film.
