I interviewed my grandmother, who is now 80 years old.
What jobs did you do when you were a teenager? My grandmother worked as a waitress at a local diner when she was a teenager. She also worked part-time as a babysitter for families in the neighborhood.
How much did you earn in those jobs? She earned about $1 per hour as a waitress and $5 per hour as a babysitter.
What did you do at work? As a waitress, she took customers' orders, served food, and cleaned tables. As a babysitter, she played with the children, prepared meals, and helped with homework.
Did many of your friends also work when they were teenagers? Yes, many of her friends also worked as teenagers. Some worked in factories, some as nannies, and others in clothing stores.
